Aug 28 - The MELBOURNE Edition

Hey music amigos,

We're LIVE in Melbourne and the music here is too much to actually do justice with just one Friday Radio... but we're going to try.
Let's start with the true blue Melbournians who've been born bred and brought up to bring great music to the folks of the city:

Let's start with the Avalanches.

special 25 min mix

Speaking with the good people of polyester records, the avalanches are releasing a new record for 2010 so look out for more great mixes from the mistros of melbourne.

Some places to check out when you're ever in melbourne

The croft institute

Walk in straight from croft lane... looks dingy but when you reach the end, it's a haven of potent drinks and trip hip hop in a midst of scientific beakers, sinks and syringes of tasty liquid delights enough to give you a pleasant haze to lace the start of your night.

I like this band called The Cat Empire - great live act

Hello hello :)

[NICK]

Melbourne. I dunno guys. If all you can come up with is the Cat Empire and a new zealand band then we really need to talk:

HUnters and Collectors - "Throw your arms around me" is the classic but this is a killer too. Outrageously good band.

AC/DC - they're from Sydney but everyone knows we carry the Mexicans. They can have this one for free:

[FR]
Now that i have more time with a comp, here's more music from melbourne:

Little nobody - "george sanders (the caddish crooner mix)"

a trippy one from the melbourne born, tokyo based producer

Tina Arena - "I want to know what love is" (cover)

Macromantics - "apple crumble"

Kate Ceberano - "go your own way"

and of course...of course

Missy Higgins - "secret"

enjoy!

[[BEN W.]

A bit late in the week, but here we go. Quite retro here.

Paul Kelly - How to Make Gravy

Uncanny X-men - 50 years
We're almost halfway there since this pensive song came out. Last I heard Brian Mannix was the groundskeeper at Trinity Grammar School.

Obligatory Hunters track
Hunters & Collectors - Say Goodbye

The boy from Caulfield Grammer
Nick Cave - Into My Arms

Australian Crawl - The Boys Light Up

Stephen Cummings - Gymnasium
NSFW:

From across the border for Nick
Midnight Oil - Used & Abused

Aug 21 - The SYDNEY Edition

G'Day!
We continue our musical journey into Down Under.
Australia is a goldmine of audio delights and we can only do the volume of music justice by dedicating a week to each major state... starting with Sydney.

Katalyst - "Dedicated"

Pnau - "With you forever"

The Welcome Mat - "Play me"

(ahh... classic 90s hair)

Ratcat - "That Ain't bad"

You Am I - "Berlin chair" (live at Arias 94')

Severed Heads - "Big Car"

Electronic from 1989 (wow), somehow i feel this song can be played at a poptart sesh and still kinda works.

and of course the bands that have gained worldwide recognition and placed Aussie on the map as the country to watch:

AC/DC - "Walk all over you"

INXS - "What you need" (Live Aid 1985)

and i'll end off with everyone's favourite wolverine with his little Tony number

What are your favourite songs from these or other Sydney musicians?

NEXT WEEK:
Continuing our journey through aussieland.
It's a special next week as Friday Radio comes to you LIVE from our week's theme city MELBOURNE. So join us as we soak in as much Melbournian music as we can.

[HAMISH]

I can't think of a better song for this weeks theme.

The Whitlams - Love This City

enjoy.

[NICK C.]

The Moriarty brothers are from Canberra but they played some great Sunday evenings at the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown back in the day. Love the Gaddies.

Assuming you're not going to do a Brisbane week, Sunnyboys are one of the great pub bands with an awesomely consistent if short output.
